Tips On Baking A Birthday Cake
Baking a birthday cake can be very stressful, there are lots of things that can go wrong, but with proper practice and preparation it is actually very easy. In this post I’ll show you how to practice, how to make a single cake go a long way, and how to choose the right pan.
If this is your first cake, or you haven’t decorated a cake in a long time you’ll want to spend some time practicing some techniques. The most important thing that you’ll want to practice is using the icing bag. It’s easy to tell when someone doesn’t know what they’re doing with an icing bag, so it’s important that you get it right on the final cake. You can either bake off some round practice cakes and decorate (and eat) those or you can use the back of a clean cookie sheet and scrape the icing back into the bowl to practice again. Either way you do it you have to learn how the pressure of your fingers and hand affect the rate that the icing comes out and how to get a clean release from the stars.
Choosing a cake pan that suits your skill level is important as well. A novice painter wouldn’t set out to replicate the Mona Lisa on their first canvas, so you’ll have to find a pan that doesn’t have a lot of detail and has lots of blocks of solid color (think Spongebob or Elmo). If you have a pan that is a bit more advanced, that’s fine just spend more time practicing to get the technique down before baking the final cake.
If you’re in a situation where it doesn’t make sense to have multiple cakes, but need to feed a lot of mouths you can use 3D cake pans. These cakes are essentially two cake that are baked and adhered together with frosting. They’re a bit harder to decorate, but the amount of cake that you get from them is incredible.
Baking a birthday cake is a lot of fun and a good way to show off your creativity. Spending the time to learn it before jumping in to the final cake will make it fun and prevent a lot of stress!
