Understanding the Environmental Causes of Middle Insomnia
Not everyone who has insomnia struggles to fall asleep when they go to bed at night. Some people wake up and have an inability to fall back asleep. This condition is called middle insomnia, and it really can wreck havoc on your life.
Obviously getting some sleep is better than getting none at all. The primary advantage that people with middle insomnia have over people with regular insomnia is that at least they get some sleep early in the night. That does not mean that waking up at 2am and not going to sleep is easy though.
If you suffer from middle insomnia, there may be some things that you can do to help the situation. The first thing that you will want to look at is your environment. Your problem may be that something is routinely waking you up at night and once you are up you have a hard time falling back asleep.
Are there noises that are waking you up at night? As long as those noises don’t involve your children, the best thing to do is drown them out. You can do this with a white noise maker. You can also get a CD and MP3 that has white noise on it. My personal favorite is rain, but there are many options to choose from.
You also may be waking up because there is too much light in your room. This can happen in some locations early in the morning, but you may also have a bright light outside your window that is responsible for you waking up. If light is the problem, you can either get black out shades or get an eye pillow. Eye pillows are fairly inexpensive and many are surprisingly comfortable.
Another environmental cause of middle insomnia is the temperature. Is your home too cold or hot? If so, this may be waking you up at night. For better sleep, try keeping your home between 65 and 70 degrees. There are many ways to fall asleep! You just have to find what works best for you.
